Ratios
Ratios are a mathematical expression to compare units.
There are 3 blue squares to 1 yellow square
When describing a ratio, the first number is known as the ‘antecedent’ and the second is the ‘consequent’. So, in the ratio 4:2, the antecedent is 4 and the consequent is 2.
Ratios can be written in three ways:
x to y
x:y
x / y

Proportions
A proportion is an equation that says that two ratios are equivalent.
When setting up a proportion formula make sure the units in each ratio are the same. If you put one unit in the numerator for one of the ratios then the second ratio should have that same unit in its numerator position.
1. First step is to setup the proportion formula
The percent is 25, the whole is 160, and we want to find the "part":
X = 25
160 100
2. Multiply across the known corners, then divide by the third number:
X = (160 × 25) / 100
= 4000 / 100
X = 40
Answer: 25% of 160 is 40.

Percentages
Percent means “for every 100” or "out of 100."
Percentage is a fraction whose denominator is 100.
Percentages can be written as decimals by moving the decimal point two places to the left.
Decimals can be written as a percentages by moving the decimal point two places to the right
A percent proportion is an equation where a percent is equal to an equivalent ratio.
Example:
25 % of 200 is ____
In this problem, of = 200, is = ?, and % = 25
We get:
is/200 = 25/100
Since is in an unknown, you can replace it by X to make the problem more familiar.
X = 25
200 100
Cross multiply to get X × 100 = 200 × 25
y × 100 = 5000
Divide 5000 by 100 to get y
Since 5000/100 = 50, y = 50
So, 25 % of 200 is 50
