What is Note Taking?

Note taking is the act of recording information from many different sources in order to review or remember later. Note taking doesn't mean writing down everything you read or hear but to make brief bullet points or summarize in your own words the key information from a source.

Why do we take notes:

To recall information for later review

To help you better understand information and increase learning

To rewrite information in your own words to help with maintaining essential information

To help you to stay focus and pay attention to the information you are learning

To find out what you know and what you need to continue to review

to organize information in a structured way

Note Taking Methods

When you use the charting note-taking method, you divide you paper into columns and organize information into different categories or topics. Each column will have its own title or label. You enter notes under each related column.
