Infection Control

As an Esthetician, it is important that you practice infection control by ensuring the safety and cleanliness of all tools, instruments, and equipment that are used on clients.

Sanitation

This is the lowest level of sanitation of all three types of infection prevention.

Different types of sanitation procedures include:

  • Cleaning with soaps, detergents, and EPA registered cleaning products
  • Using antiseptics
  • Using UV sanitizers, or sterilizers
  • Laundering with bleach or lysol

Areas/items that need sanitization:

  • Countertops, sinks, floors, toilets, doorknobs, mirrors, magnifying lamps, dispensary, facial beds
  • Towels, linens, headbands
  • Your hands prior to each service

Hand Washing

Disinfection

Because disinfecting does not kill bacteria spores, it is the second in the levels of decontamination.

Different disinfection procedure examples:

  • Immersion in EPA-registered, hospital grade, bactericidal, pseudomonacidal, fungicidal, and virucidal disinfectant for amount of time specified by manufacturer.
  • Immersion in EPA-registered disinfectant with demonstrated efficacy against HIV-1/HBV or tuberculosis for the amount of time specified by the manufacturer (for items that have come into contact with bodily fluids and/or blood)
  • Spraying or wiping with an EPA-Registered, hospital-grade disinfectant

Different areas/items in need of disinfecting:

  • Nonporous tools and implements such as tweezers, scissors, plastics spatulas, and so on
  • Electrotherapy tools

Barbicide

Barbicide is a common hospital grade disinfectant that is used in the beauty industry to disinfect tools and instruments used on hair and skin.

Sterilization

In comparison to sanitation and disinfection, sterilization is the best method of decontamination because it kills most contaminates.

Methods of Sterilization

The most common methods of sterilization in an esthetic setting are a steam autoclave and dry heat. An Autoclave is a machine that uses pressure and steam to sterilize instruments such as lancets and any facial tools that puncture or break the skin. Any other instrument that may come in contact with bodily fluids, blood, or pus will need to be sterilized as well.
