What is Fungi?

All about Fungi

Fungi can be divided into three catagories:

  • Mushroom: The fruiting body of fungi. Macroscopic Fungi
  • Mold: Multicellular fungi, which grow in the form of long branches (called hyphae).
  • Yeast: Microscopic round single-celled organisms. 

Main Characteristics of Fungi:

  • Eukaryotic cells
  • Non-photosynthetic (heterotrophic)
  • Most fungi are multicellular but some are single-celled
  • Fungi reproduce both sexually and asexually.

Classifying Fungi

Fungi are mostly classified by the shape of the reproductive structures (Fruiting Bodies)

  • Phylum: Cryptomycota, Microsporidia, Blastocladiomycota, Chytridiomycota, Zoopagomycota, Mucoromycota, Ascomycota, and Basidiomycota.
