The study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. The course provides students with a foundation in basic microbiology with emphasis on infectious disease. Topics include microbial diversity, microbial cell biology, microbial genetics, interactions and impact of microorganisms and humans, microorganisms and human disease.

Microbiology contains several subfields:

  • Bacteriology is the study of bacteria

  • Mycology is the study of fungi

  • Protozoology is the study of protozoa

  • Phycology: the study of algae.

  • Parasitology is the study of helminths and other parasites

  • Virology is the study of viruses 

  • Helminthology is the study of parasitic worms (helminths)

  • Nematology: the study of nematodes (roundworms).
