Copyright, plagiarism and fair use

Copyright, Fair Use and Plagiarism Defined

Plagiarism: The act of taking someone else work or ideas and incorporating it into your work without acknowledging the original creator.

Fair Use: a fair use is any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited purpose. See full definition here.

Copy Right:  According to copyright.gov "Copyright is a type of intellectual property that protects original works of authorship as soon as an author fixes the work in a tangible form of expression. In copyright law, there are a lot of different types of works, including paintings, photographs, illustrations, musical compositions, sound recordings, computer programs, books, poems, blog posts, movies, architectural works, plays, and so much more!"

Quote on Plagiarism

"You don't want to become guilty of plagiarism by letting someone else's words get inadvertently mixed in with your own. If you do feel the need to paste in a block of research while you're writing, be sure to highlight the copied text in a different color so you can go back and remove or rewrite it entirely later."  Gayle Lynds
