The coding system for plate or structural welding is as follows:
There are two types of joints used in welding certification and they are:
Most certification test will use Groove welds
The coding system to identify the positions and joint types for pipe welding:
Just like structural welding positions pipe welding certifications come in two joint types:
Non destructive tests use various methods such as visual inspection, ultrasonic vibration, X-ray, liquid penetration, etc. to test the quality of a weld and reveal cracks, unfilled craters, overlaps etc. that could lead to repairs or rejection of the work.
Destructive tests are either chemical tests, hardness tests or mechanical tests which all involve cutting a section of the welded joint along the weld and testing it until it ruptures.
Each of these will determine the type of welding and process they are using to test for certifications example: GMAW 3G
Welding Certifications are technically a hands-on welder qualification test that is conducted by certified welding inspector that will determine if the person or machine can produce a sound quality weld up to the code or welding procedure needed for a Company, job site or a particular industry standard.
