Reference Sources for English

Reference books are available at each of the four campus-library locations.  Ask your local librarian for assistance. 

Books on literature have call numbers beginning with P, for example:

  • PE – English language (including dictionaries and thesauri)
  • PN –  Literature (general) (including books on theatre and film)
  • PR – British literature
  • PS –American literature

For reference books on literature, you can browse in the REF P’s, or ask a librarian to help you find what you need.  Here are a few sample books (you may find more on these topics with similar call numbers): 

  • World Literature Set  (REF PN 523.M29 2009)

Dictionaries:  You’ll find dictionaries and thesauri in the PEs, including the Random House Dictionary Unabridged (REF PE 1625 .R3 1979).   You can access the online version of dictionaries or thesauri through GALILEO.

If you want a dictionary you can check out, we have several in General Circulation with call numbers beginning PE 1625 to PE 1628. For dictionaries of slang, regional English or Spanish, try:
