Preparing for an Interview

The Interview

Your goal during an interview is to convince the employer that you are the best candidate for the job. In order to accomplish this, you must be able to clearly convey and present your skills and strengths to the interviewer by answering questions and by the way you present yourself through your body language and state of confidence.

Types of Interviews

  • Phone Interviews: interview is conducted over the phone using in the screening process

  • One-On-One Interviews or Face-To-Face Interviews / Traditional: Interview is done in an office setting one on one with either an hiring manager, supervisor, or Director/CEO.

  • Panel or Committee Interviews: You will be interviewed by multiple personnel at the same time

  • Breakfast or Lunch Interviews: interview takes place over a meal with one individual or a group

  • Remote or Video Interview: The interviewer will conduct the interview by means of a video conference or they will have the applicant record there answers to the interviewer's questions

  • Behavioral Interviews: Ask you questions about how you have handled situations in past jobs

  • Case Interviews: You will be given scenarios and you must show or communicate to the interviewer how you would manage the situation.

  • Situational Interview: presents the interviewee with situational or scenario type questions to see how you would handle the problem 

  • Stress Interviews: Used to show how an applicant will handle stress on the job

  • Competency Based Interviews: You will be asked questions pertaining to soft skills and your competencies on the job

Tips for Interviews

Before the interview:

  • Be Prepared: Research the company you are applying for
  • Know what the job description entails 
  • Practice: conduct Mock Interviews. prepare a list of answers to questions you may be asked along with examples that represent skills or problem solving
  • Prepare your dress prior to the interview / Learn about the companies dress code

During the interview:

  • Dress for Success: Dress according to the job you are applying / be professional 
  • Bring a notebook, pen, and extra copies of your resume and references to the interview
  • Always show good eye contact during the interview
  • Listen carefully during interview and answer all questions directly with examples 
  • Prepare a list of questions for the interviewer
  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early
  • Turn cellphones off during interview
  • Show confidence and make a great first impression
  • Always answer the questions with integrity
  • Never speak bad about past employers

Interview Questions

Tips:

  • Listen carefully to the interviewer and the questions he / she may ask 
  • Answer all questions truthfully do not over exaggerate
  • Be sure you understand the question; if not, ask for clarification. 
  • Answer all questions completely and concisely. Tailor your answers to the job you are applying and how you will be an asset to the company and give good examples.
  • Always use professional Language and answer questions with correct grammar
